  • Regionals just like Broncs Season

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 29, 2024

The regional playoff for the Burns Broncs was a chance to highlight their talents. The Broncs are a good team that did not get breaks during the season. Regionals would be the chance to make up for the season and move into the state tournament. Unfortunately for the Broncs the regionals would go the way the season did for them. The Broncs would start the regionals off with a game against the Tongue River Eagles. The Eagles are seated number one in the Northeast and have a 5-1, conference record. The Broncs knew that every team starts the...

  • Ref Calls Last Game

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 22, 2024

The one person on the field, court or mat that we all love to hate is the referee. These are the men and women that keep our young athletes in line and following the rules. They make unpopular calls and throw flags and enforce the penalties that irritate us all. Especially when the game is on the line and emotions are high both in the game and in the stands. Still these dedicated people are an integral part of the game and keep our young athletes safe and playing within the rules. A long-time...

  • Hornets Declaw the Tigers

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 22, 2024

The Hornets took on the 15-6 Niobrara County Tigers last Friday in an in-conference game. The Tigers are currently seated third in the 2A Southeast conference and winning would help the Hornets move on to the Regionals starting this week. Carsten Freeburg took the game seriously and to a whole new scoring level for the Hornets. Freeburg hit over 80% of his shots. The Hornets won the contest 73-48. • Lady Hornets can't bulldog win from Lady Doggers

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 22, 2024

The Lady Hornets came off a convincing win over the Lady Tigers that added to the four-game winning streak they were on. Unfortunately, the streak came to an end when they faced the Lingle-Ft Laramie Lady Doggers last Saturday. The Lady Doggers, who are currently seated number one in the 2A southeast conference and 6-0 in conference play were ready for the Lady Hornets. In this game the Lady Hornets did not have one player that was hitting shots. All of them were. It was a great team effort, but the Lady Hornets lost the in-conference match-up...

  • Doggers rope the Hornets

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 22, 2024

Coming off the impressive win over the Tigers the Hornets were looking to buzz their way to Lusk and build some momentum heading into the regionals. The Hornets 73-48 victory over the Tigers gave them the morale boost to take on the number two-seated team in the southeastern conference. Unlike the last game where Carsten Freeburg dominated the scoring, the team would pull together and everyone would contribute. Three of the Hornets had double-digit scores and the rest were very close. Although the Hornets never really outscored the Doggers...

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 22, 2024

In the Broncs final game of the season, the Broncs were outplayed and out scored by the Lingle-Ft Laramie Doggers 31-60. It was a disappointing game for the Broncs as their play was not that bad. Some of their shots were off and the defense was sometimes slow to get into position, but the Broncs played hard the entire game. The Broncs offense had some great moments. Mason Medley got the ball at the top of the key and drove the lane for the lay-up. Later he got the ball again and drove the left...

After that the Hornets buzzed all around the Broncs. Having watched the Broncs play it is hard to believe their record. The team seemed disciplined, controlled and hustled up and down the court. The only downside would be their shooting and situational awareness. The Hornets took advantage of this and defeated the Broncs in a game that was closer than the...

  • Hornets Battle Longhorns

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 15, 2024

A non-conference match up against the 13-7 Kimball Longhorns had the 7-13 Hornets working hard for every point. The Hornets are definitely saving their best ball for the latter half of the season. This caliber of playing by the Hornets would be championship quality. And both teams were definitely up for the challenge. The Longhorns were able to outscore the Hornets and keep them from getting into their game. Even with the defense of the Longhorns three of the Hornets team were able to score in...

  • Lady Hornets buzz the Lady Longhorns

    Jim Merryfield|Feb 15, 2024

In a spirited competition at the Hornets Nest the Lady Hornets tipped off against the cross-border Kimball Lady Longhorns. This would be a non-conference game mainly for bragging rights. On a sad note, the Lady Hornets lost one of their starters, Kelsie Bymer to an injury. Looks like she may be out for the rest of the season. The Lady Hornets wasted no time setting the stage for their dominance in the game. Jessica Hoffman would be the first to score with a nice lay-up. Avery Gray got a nice put...
