As we waited for “Titan,” the forecasted blizzard to hit last weekend, I wondered why we name winter storms. We’ve had “Sandy,” “Iago,” “Gandolph,” “Q,” and who can forget our favorite little fishy “Nemo” from the Disney movie of the same name? According to the National Weather Service there are five reasons to name winter storms:

• Naming a storm raises awareness.

• Attaching a name makes it much easier to follow a weather system’s progress.

• A storm with a name takes on a personality all its own, which adds to awareness.

• In today’s social media world, a name makes it much easier to refere...
