Herford community news

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Kathy Zitek reminded people that there are clothes and other items downstairs at the church for those who need them. Then she read some short funny stories. Steve Hauer showed a video by comedian Mark Lowry. The sermon topic was “Winning the Race.” The Olympics are coming up soon and Pastor Opdycke told a little about the history of the olympics. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 the apostle Paul is writing to a church in Greece where the people would understand about running a race. As we run our race as Christians, the keys to victory are the same. We need determination and discipline.

We must stay on the right course and obey the rules so we can defeat our opponents and receive the rewards. Because after the race has finished, Christ will judge us all. We have the Holy Spirit as our helper and the Bible as our guidebook, and we need to use them wisely.

Next week the sermon topic will be “More Precious Than Gold.” On Feb. 9 there will be a potluck dinner after the service and the film “Last Ounce of Courage” will be shown. Everyone is welcome to attend.
