Pine Bluffs student performs with School of Rock

Pine Bluffs Junior High School student Jessi Weller recently spent most of the fall semester and part of the spring semester learning the finer points of playing the bass guitar at the School of Rock program in Denver, Colo. The program draws on youths ranging from as young as seven to those who are upperclassmen in high school. Weller, an eighth-grade student, received a scholarship to the program valued at $1,5000 after winning a contest through a Colorado radio station. After that, she and her father, Jeff, traveled to Denver each weekend so Weller could receive individualized lessons before rehearsing a number of classic rock songs from the 1960s with her future band mates. At the end of the classes, Weller and her bandmates performed for their families, friends and members of the public. Asked if she wants to attend the program in the future, Weller gave a resounding yes.

For most of the fall school semester and into this year, youths from the Mountain West gathered and learned the fundamentals of playing Rock n' Roll music.

And that included Pine Bluffs eighth-grade student Jessi Weller.

Weller joined students from seven-year-olds to high school seniors last semester for the School of Rock Program held in Denver.

In School of Rock, kids of all ages learn the basic and advanced aspects of their respective instruments. At the end of the program, they perform in a local venue for the public.

Weller's instrument of choice? The bass guitar.
