  • 2015 ends on a festive note

    Polly Taylor|Dec 31, 2015

The year has come to an end, and Christmas came and went last week. Santa Claus took time to visit Pine Bluffs Elementary before students were released for vacation, shown here with his elf Bob Lyons of the Lions Club. Lions Club members were also out in the cold weather on Dec. 23 to help distribute food boxes. Tim Wilkins of the Lions Club finishes loading a truck with boxes. The Lions worked with members of American Legion Post 60 and the local FFA chapter (story on Page 18). The annual...

  • Just a Few Thoughts...About Resolutions

    Polly Taylor|Dec 31, 2015

It’s that time of year again. Time to make a lot of long-term (12 month) promises to yourself that you’ll most likely not keep. I think I’ve managed to keep a few New Year’s resolutions in my entire life, including one this past year – well almost. The other day, though, I was reading an article about New Year’s, resolutions, losing weight, yada, yada, yada....and one suggestion in particular that stood out from all of the others was completely logical. Now, I’m no Mr. Spock. I try...

Every year the Pine Bluffs Lions Club, along with members of American Legion Post 60, and students who are members of the local FFA Chapter, come together to distribute food boxes to those in need, to help them over the holidays. This year was no different, as the group gathered together in the cold winter temperatures to get the job done Dec. 23. Alisha Michaud, director of the Pine Bluffs Senior Center, is responsible for determining how many boxes will be delivered to Pine Bluffs, and spent...

  • Just a few thoughts...about the past year

    Polly Taylor|Dec 24, 2015

It’s Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas! How about this weather? I recall it being this cold last year, but I don’t recall this much snow still on the ground. I just recently celebrated my one year anniversary with the Pine Bluffs Post, and next week I will celebrate one year as the General Manager. The past year has been a roller coaster of events, some good and some not so good; but then again, isn’t that usually how things go in business? I have met many new people under a variety of...

    Polly Taylor|Dec 17, 2015

The Burns Jr/Sr High School Band and high school Choir performed a Christmas concert to a packed house last week. The high school band started out the evening playing a medley of songs from popular Christmas movies and programs, such as Charlie Brown's Christmas and Home Alone. The combined band (shown) played the tune Bullet Train, which incorporated horns, strings, wind and percussion instruments; the March from The Nutcracker; and ended with a lively number, Santa Rocks the House, complete...

Pictured is the wife of Police Reserve Officer Mike Moore with one of the 10 children selected for the outing, checking out a possible addition to what he had already chosen. Afterward the kids were treated to lunch at Pizza Hut....

  • Just a Few Thoughts...on Kwanzaa

    Polly Taylor|Dec 17, 2015

You know, it’s not that I don’t have anything better to write about, but I think newspapers can also be used as an educational tool, to explain the meaning behind certain events and celebrations. Last week I talked about Chanukah, and this week it is Kwanzaa. While Kwanzaa is not considered a religious celebration, like Chanukah and Christmas, it does fall during the Christian holiday season, and is meant to be a time of sharing, and the gathering of families and friends. Kwanzaa is a...

  • Let it snow...

    Polly Taylor|Dec 17, 2015

Let it Snow..Let it Snow..Let it Snow, and snow is exactly what residents of Pine Bluffs, southeastern Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle received beginning late Monday night and into Tuesday. This photo was taken at the corner of 2nd and Elm streets where the Pine Bluffs Post and Pine Bluffs Feed and Grain are located. Visibility was low, and the snow was coming down hard. Snow plows were out, and some cars could be heard spinning their wheels in the accumulating snow....

  • Really, Dad?

    Polly Taylor|Dec 10, 2015

On Monday, Nov. 30, Pine Bluffs officially ushered in the beginning of the Christmas season, as well as the jolly old elf in red himself, Santa Claus. He listened to childhood wishes for toys, and also met some of the newest recipients of his generosity, like the youngster pictured who appeared to be looking at his parents and saying, "Really? Help me out here. Now what do I do?"...

  • Just a Few Thoughts...about Chanukah

    Polly Taylor|Dec 10, 2015

The other day I was listening to North Pole radio, and I heard the individual who was pretending to be Santa Claus say “Happy Kwanzaa” and “Happy Chanukah” and then proceed to announce that those were just other ways to say “Merry Christmas”. Ummmm…no they are not. Kwanzaa has nothing to do with Christmas, and has only been in existence for a few years. It gives African-Americans a way to celebrate their culture and food, and it just happens to be celebrated during the period...

    Polly Taylor|Dec 10, 2015

Many of the children who visited Santa during the Christmas at Home festivities were not in a hurry to meet the big guy in red, Santa Claus, like the young lady pictured above. But with a little coaxing from her dad, as well as Santa, she was all smiles, and didn't want her visit to end....

  • Gator's Travelyn Motel object of armed robbery

    Polly Taylor|Dec 3, 2015

Well, it looks like the Grinch has cloned himself, but in a female version, and the pair decided to make some local businesses targets of their less than honorable intentions over the Thanksgiving weekend. Very early Saturday morning, Nov. 28, around 1:45 a.m., a caucasian male and female held up the office of Gator's Travelyn Motel, and made away with an undisclosed amount of cash. They originally walked into the office together and spoke to the man who was on duty, and then the alleged male...

  • Just a Few Thoughts...HalloThanksChristmas?

    Polly Taylor|Nov 26, 2015

Ok. Just recently I read about this new ‘term’ - if that’s what you want to call it - HalloThanksChristmas, and then I actually heard someone use it, and I have to say – I DON’T LIKE IT ONE LITTLE BIT! First of all, the modern celebration of Halloween, which started out as a religious celebration of All Hallows Eve, preceding All Saints Day on Nov. 1 a few centuries ago by the Scottish, bears no resemblance to that kind of holiday, and hasn’t for as long as I have been alive, and...

  • Hail Caesar

    Polly Taylor|Nov 5, 2015

There were witches, grim reapers, princesses and even a fire dog and a John Deere tractor at Friday night's Halloween Carnival in Pine Bluffs, but one little boy, complete with a crown of olive leaves stood out as Julius Caesar as he calmly awaited the judges' decision during costume competition....
