  • Life as it should be: A visit with the Grand Marshals

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

Who knew that a motor scooter that “didn’t start and wouldn’t go anywhere” could lead two people through over 60 years of wonderful life together. It was 1947, and John Marquardt’s parents were looking for land to purchase to start their farm after moving from Scribner, Neb., to Pine Bluffs. Roberta (Johnson) came over on her motor scooter and although she couldn’t ride off in the sunset with the eighth grader, John, she stole his heart. “We never quite got over each other,” Roberta says wi... Full story

  • The Duck Whisperer's take on Wyoming political scene

    Bill Sniffin, www.billsniffin.com|Aug 1, 2013

What possible connection could a bunch of ducks have to do with Wyoming’s current political situation? Well, let me explain. My relatives refer to me as “The Duck Whisperer,” since we have tame ducks that qualify as our pets. No dogs. No cats. No parakeets. No hamsters. Just ducks. And we have odd ducks, sitting ducks, lame ducks and we even have daffy ducks. Here are some thoughts on the current political situation, duck-wise: • Sitting Duck – Although he is far from being a lame duck, U....

  • What to do with spent blooms

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

There was a clearance sale on flowers at the grocery store this weekend. A rose bush was marked down from $20 to $1.99. Even at that price it was going to be a luxury purchase, so I stood there and stared at it and tried to find something wrong with it. I left the store without the rose. I told the blooming youth in the car what I found and they agreed we should buy it. Hard to argue with $2 and three blondes. So, I parked again, and everyone got out to buy the clearance flower. When we got it...

  • Letter to the editor

    Senator Mike Enzi|Aug 1, 2013

Earlier this month, Diana and I travelled over 2,000 miles across Wyoming. We held “Collecting Common Sense from Wyoming for Washington” listening sessions in seven communities in the state. We were pleased to hear from Pine Bluffs area residents. A New York Times reporter who attended a few of the meetings told me he was surprised with how informed people were. He shouldn’t have been surprised. I wasn’t. I appreciate the ability of Wyoming folks to know what is wrong and to come up with new ide...

  • Banner News

    Barb Cross|Aug 1, 2013

Good morning to all in Banner County, surrounding friends and neighbors. I recently heard a friend remark that they had gone to bed in July and woken up and it was mid-September. That pretty much sums it all up. Wow, has the weather ever changed. The first day or two it felt pretty good after all of the heat, however, now it is getting boring and not so nice. I need some sun, and no wind please! The 4-H kids had a plan to do some painting at the fair grounds and it has been postponed until next...

  • Albin News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Aug 1, 2013

The rain came down in buckets this past week. It was welcome relief and kept us out of the “red” zone for fire danger. However, I did notice the fire department garage doors open a few times. Be safe out there with open fires. High danger or not, it’s a big responsibility to our land, our neighbors, and ourselves. I know some of you parents of school age children are secretly counting the days until school starts. Classes start Aug. 21 with half days for the first week. You can get a list of al...

  • Crock pot cooking is no 'nonsense'

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

Are you ready to say goodbye to summer? Have you gotten out your slow cooker yet? (Mine rarely sees the inside of the storage cupboard.) As summer turns into fall, it’s nice to take one last longing tasteful glance at fresh vegetable salads, berries filling the fridge and pie tins, and the whiff of grilled beef on the patio. But wait a minute. We live in the get-anything-you-want grocery market era. You can still have fresh tomatoes on a grilled burger. Maybe not picked out of your back yard s...

  • Looking Back

    Aug 1, 2013

1 years ago San Francisco. - Of the hardships endured by the “jayhawkers of ‘90,” as the survivors of the first band of white people ever to cross Death Valley are now called, little has been told. The memories of 52 days spent in the sand of the Mojave Desert, with boiled ox hide for food, and water as an occasional luxury, however, are kept alive by the Jayhawkers’ society, whose four members, one of them a woman nearly 100 years old, hold yearly meetings. Elam, the white bulldog owned b...

  • Taking a lesson from password protection

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

I have so many Internet accounts! And each has a different password. That’s for safety, you know. At least that’s what they tell us from the “offices” of Internet-land. The problem for me, and others I’ve discovered, is that it is just plain hard to remember all those passwords. And personal identification numbers – don’t want to leave those out! Every account needs a different number or series of numbers and letters and we are not supposed to write them down. Huh? How are we supposed to remembe...

  • No till notes - cover crops?

    Mark Watson|Aug 1, 2013

I intentionally put a question mark behind my title “Cover Crops” for this article because I think they have raised more questions than any production practice I’ve seen in farming. I don’t think there is any doubt the production of cover crops can improve the soil. The big question is how to implement them profitably into a cropping system. In Furrow magazine recently published an article titled “Cover Crops Face Off With Fallow”. The article looks at some claims that cover crops save more m...
