Good morning! Well it is still bright and beautiful outside my windows. Some recent warmer weather has helped melt the snow a tiny bit but there is still plenty of it around. We still have a fairly good sized snow mound to slide on. Come on over if you are inclined to do that. At this point I am just glad that I do not live in California, Arizona, or anywhere back east. The weather there has not been so great. The ‘winter blues’ have not hit me yet, have they got you? If so, the Western Neb...

Good morning Banner County, and a very cold one it is! We have hit 30 degrees here of late and it has felt like a heat wave. Under 80 days until spring....just sayin. Well the teachers and staff returned to school Monday, January 4th and some students happily returned on Tuesday, the 5th. Some students just returned and some parents were happy for them. I would be one of those parents. We had a really nice vacation from school, but the house has been total chaos for the past two weeks and I am...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors both near and far! Here is hoping that you all had a very, very Merry Christmas. Christmas Eve services at the Harrisburg Community Church were uplifting, with many braving the cold temperatures. The ice candles were glowing, and so were many faces as we remembered the reason for the season. As more snow and wind blew in Saturday night causing closed roads and cancellations of church services Sunday morning, I think we were extra glad for the Thursday servic...

Well, today is Christmas Eve. It seems like many of us await this day/evening all year long. It is the accumulation of one year gone, the good and bad of it, our accomplishments and failures. Our hopes, dreams, joy and sadness all gone and us ready for another year, another chance. May each of you enjoy this Christmas Season, and may the true meaning of the season be with you all year long. Evening candlelight services will be held at the Harrisburg Community Church this evening at 6 p.m. and...

Good morning Banner County, friends and neighbors both near and far. A little snow in the area has made it seem more like December, and the trees were beautiful Saturday afternoon. Roads became pretty icy however, and no one likes that. The first official day of winter is Dec. 22, so we still have a few days of the fall season left, ha ha. The elementary classes will hold their Christmas parties this Thursday, Dec. 17, and then they will go caroling Friday morning at Heritage in the valley....

Good morning Banner County!! I hope everyone has been enjoying this nice spring weather. According to the weather forecast it is about to cool off again, at least for awhile. This whole year has been a roller coaster ride. Guess we will just set back and enjoy it. I saw a bumper sticker once that said “Sit down, shut up, and hold on!” Kind of how it is. The Central-Banner County 4-H Club did just that this past Sunday while they went Christmas caroling around Harrisburg. Dave and Kim Hansen bro...

Good morning Harrisburg, Banner County and friends near and far. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family, friends, and food. We sure did, and enjoyed visiting and cooking/baking with each other. We also missed the family that were not with us. Another fun time this past weekend was the baby shower for Keah Cross. Everyone enjoyed themselves decorating onesies for the expected little one, and guests ranged from tiny infants to an aunt who was 100 years young. Now that is pretty...

Good morning and Happy Turkey Day! We have many things to be thankful for each and every day and we hope you all feel the same way. We have been making pies and all of the rest of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner goodies and wish you and yours the best, and safe travel to all of you who will be on the roads to and from. As I mentioned last week, the students have been out of school this week and schedules will soon turn back to their normal. College students are home also and will be heading...

Good morning Banner County! Monday was a pretty decent fall day, and since then it has been acting like December; it’s about to show us the beginning of a different weather story. I was in some store this past weekend, and a sign said ‘40 days until Christmas.’ I really wanted to take out my sharpie and add ‘not enough!’, but I didn’t. It seems to me once school starts, the next week it is Hallothanks/Christmas. Stores are filled with Christmas trees and lots of things, pushing us to buy more an...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. We had a beautiful fall weekend, and the snow is still pretty much holding off. Good news, right? More good news. Our population is growing. Saryah Leigh Mason arrived Nov. 4, 2015, weighing 7 pounds and 12 ounces. She is the daughter of Sarah and Ryan, and granddaughter of Gary Grubbs. Congratulations! Speaking of children, many of you know little Sierra Johnson. She recently tripped and fell into a campfire, and has some second degree burns on...

Well good morning to everyone out there in news land! Hope you all have at least semi-adjusted to daylight savings time. I have not. November is here, and I am about as ready for it as I am going to get. The yard is winterized, house painted, screens not finished, and doors will do. Windows also. Halloween is over, and as most of you know I do not like this holiday at all. However, I do not begrudge those who celebrate, and I definitely enjoy the candy part. I only mentioned the day because my...

Happy Fall Ya’ll is almost a thing of the past as we quickly move into November. As I am sure you have all noticed the stores are filled with Halloween and Christmas, some with a little of Thanksgiving squished in the middle. I do not like the cold that November will bring, however, I do like the peacefulness of the month. The calm before the storm that December sometimes turns into if we let it. This past week has been Red Ribbon Week, held each year. The National Red Ribbon theme is Respect Y...

Well Hello Banner County! Welcome to the time of year when we have at least two seasons within one week. Eighty degrees one day and fifty degrees two days later. Summer is trying hard to hang on, and fall is trying to blow its way in for a month or so before the big stuff hits. The weekend was perfect for Banner County School to host MAC volleyball. I do not know how many schools were represented in the competition, but I do know that the parking lot was full, so was the gym. There was a silent...

Good morning Banner County. As I sit here this beautiful fall morning the wind is still doing its thing, but not as much as it was last Sunday. Sunday afternoon it filled one of our buildings with those little weeds that I call tumble weed want-a-be's. They are much smaller and not as spiky, but are a nuisance and plentiful. They were traveling east in the pasture, but a thousand or so managed to find their way into my yard. Bless them, now I have something to do! Just because fall is...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. The changing seasons have been pretty obvious here this past week. This has always been my favorite time of the year. I grew up in a small town with huge trees everywhere. I also spent many a weekend raking leaves while listening to the football game on the radio. Way back then we were allowed to burn the leaves and I loved the smell. The color change of the leaves was always, and still is, one of the most beautiful times of the year as far as I... Full story

Good morning friends near and far. I hope you were all able to enjoy this past weekend and the beautiful weather. Yesterday was the first official day of the fall season, so now we might begin to see a few changes. I am still mowing the lawn, but not minding one little bit. The corn is looking like it is getting ready and the fields are still seen with combines and trucks. Many of us are still dealing with insurance companies, and trying to get damages repaired before the snow starts to fly,...

Good morning! I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day, the last summer bash. Fall is surely in the air. The cooler air is wonderful, early in the morning and later in the evening. Still mowing the lawn and lovin' it. I'm sure you all know by now that the tourist attraction in Custer, The Flintstones after 50 years of entertaining us all, has forever closed. When we lived in Gillette a friend of mine and I used to gather up six kids between the two of us and head to Custer like we go to the zoo...

Good morning Banner County and welcome September! I sincerely do not know where the summer went. How 'bout you? Although the past few days have been hitting close to 100, the cooler weather will be great. Even the chickens all but stopped laying, told me it was just too hot! Banner students have spent this past week at State Fair High School Academic Competition. I do not know how well they did. Another local fellow who is competing in state horse shoe throwing is Bill Nelson. We will try to...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Things have warmed up some what this week but it sure feels like we are about to enter into our seasonal fall weather pattern. I am ok with that and it is my favorite time of the year. The goat heads and sand burrs are sure in their prime right now and many of them seem to find their way into the house. They hide out somewhere and jump out in front of me just so that I can step on them and push them as far into my feet as possible. I have lost... Full story

Good Morning Banner County! Here we are almost at the end of summer and it just does not seem possible to me. Where did the time go? I know that I did not have that much fun. I do hope we have an Indian Summer’ because I sure could use some decent weather in order to get all that needs to be taken care of finished before winter. The almanac is saying that this winter is not to be a mild one. Monday was a great day as those old yellow school buses were seen traveling the roads and depositing c... Full story

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. This week has been Kimball/Banner County Fair week and most of you have been down that road either from personal experience as youngsters, with your own kids, grandkids, or all three. It was a good fair week, although the rain could have held off just a little. Blue & Purple ribbons for our two, lots of fun, hard work, and some sad faces on sale day. We were lucky enough to keep our one granddaughter for a night or two, and she really enjoyed... Full story

The Banner/Kimball Fair has been going on since Monday and will continue through to next Monday; sale day is Aug. 10. Good beef and hog products for your freezer. Show day for hogs is Friday, Aug. 7, at 8 a.m., and for the beef it is Saturday, Aug. 8. So from now on if you see any big black steers walking around Harrisburg better call Stan, they don’t belong to my kids. Football practice will officially begin on Monday, Aug. 10, and school will officially begin one week later. I am not ready. T... Full story

Good morning Banner County! After the horrible storm and hail last week it was good to see a few combines running in our area. Several folks lost many, many acres and revenue, and others lost livestock. The sight of operating combines gives us hope and encouragement to continue. With school less than two weeks away you know county fairs are like flies, they are everywhere. Ours begins Tuesday, Aug. 4, and sale day is Monday, Aug. 10. Sewing and the style show, static events, dogs, horses, small...

Good morning Banner County. This past week was a typical July week for the most part, until Saturday, when several events had quite an impact on many of us. Our Saturday morning started out like most of them, with Joe and Grandpa heading south with a full to-do list, and Ayden and I headed north with the intention of running a few errands before attending a fun baby shower for a little guy that was long awaited. Charles Ong arrived June 29 to happy parents Tina and Calvin Ong of Scottsbluff,...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far! Wheat harvest is still something we are looking forward to as not a whole lot of it has been accomplished as of yet. Getting closer though; getting closer and warding off the hail. It was a beautiful week end for anyone who attended all, or parts of the 94th Annual Oregon Trail Day celebration though. I had a terrific summer cold that I picked up from Ayden so I avoided all of that stuff this year. Except the carnival. Which I would like to...
