  • Lending a helping hand

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jan 31, 2013

Northern Wyoming is covered in several inches of snow this morning. Judging from the fact that the Big Horn mountains a re-hidden, I am guessing there is more snow coming. With there being a large amount of snow on the ground, my task this morning was to shovel the sidewalk and clean off the cars. No easy task, let me assure you. I find as I am working my mind tends to wander. This is especially true when the work is purely physical and requires no real thoughts. This morning my thoughts wandered to my friends at the Denver Children’s H...

  • Stay healthy and help others do the same

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jan 17, 2013

I had intended to write about the wonderful, albeit sad, experience my wife and I had while watching the film, Les Miserable. I meant to tell you that, if you plan to go see it, take a box of tissues or a handkerchief. But I can’t. I can’t because I can’t get something off my mind. This year’s flu season has been a nasty one. Boston has declared a state of health emergency and many people, young and old, have died. Usually flu season isn’t something I have to worry about. I have never received a flu shot and, except when I was much younger,...

  • Change begins with you

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jan 10, 2013

With the first full week of 2013 behind us, I think I see some things that need to change. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, “Already?” Yep, already. So here goes. First, you need to stop referring to a man’s friendship with another man as a “Bromance.” Although this term was made popular by the movie, “I love You Man,” there is nothing funny about it. Seriously, just because I call my brother-in-law and talk to him about the football game doesn’t mean I am engaged in a “Bromance.” I mean, what does it even mean?! It’s a friendship, nothing mor...

  • 2013 arriving on back of resolution kept

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jan 3, 2013

Christmas is over and a new year is on the horizon. How did you spend 2012? My year was spent changing my life. As 2012 dawned, I resolved to lose weight — something I have done in the past and failed miserably at. This time was different. I actually did it. As this year comes to a close, I have lost more than 50 pounds. Being the large man that I am, I still have a long way to go. Therefore, I am once again declaring my New Year’s Resolution to be of weight loss. If I can do it in 2012 then I can do it in 2013. What about you? With the boo...

  • Where do we stand?

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Dec 20, 2012

No matter where you were this weekend, you couldn’t escape the news: Two Police Officers Killed in Topeka; One Killed Outside Theater in San Antonio; Man Fires 50 Shots at Sacramento Mall; Man Goes on Stabbing Spree in China; Gunman Kills 26 in Newtown, Conn. How do you respond to this? The outcry from the public has been about gun control on one side and mental health reform on the other. So the question to myself is, “Where do I stand?” I think most people can tell I am not a staunch conservative. In fact, I tend to have Liberal leani...

  • Christmas ... with a dash of safety

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Dec 13, 2012

As Christmas edges ever closer and families scramble to finish their shopping, another annual occurrence is taking place. That being the annual Christmas parties. For some of us, this isn’t much, maybe a gathering with a few select friends. For others it is a full blown office soiree full of fun, holiday cheer and holiday spirits. It’s those holiday spirits that tend to get people in trouble. According to statistics gathered by www.dmv.org, Alcohol-related crashes are the top cause of death among people age 16-24. Approximately 25,000 are kille...

  • Putting on our best holiday spirit

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Dec 6, 2012

There is something about the month of December that seems to bring families together. Sure, I know that Christmas is nigh and that could be weighing on it, but I think there is more to it. In December we seem more willing to accept those families members that we would otherwise try to avoid. And, instead of ignoring or avoiding them, we seem to engage in enjoyable conversation with them. I suppose December is a great month to celebrate family in all their glory or glorious faults, whatever the case may be. This weekend my family gathered at the...

  • Taking time to pick the perfect gift

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 29, 2012

Thanksgiving is gone, Black Friday is gone, and we are now in the throws of Cyber Monday. I don’t know about you, but Cyber Monday doesn’t seem to have the appeal that Black Friday does. Perhaps it does. Perhaps because it is “cyber” everyone is locked away indoors huddled over computer screens in search of that one item they can’t live without and we, that are out and about, do see them. That’s probably it. I succumbed to neither day, thankfully. I did not get up in the cold November morning and trudge off to a store only to be blinded by the...

  • I am thankful

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 29, 2012

Thanksgiving is upon us and, like so many people, I feel compelled to list the things that I am thankful for. First and foremost, I am thankful for my family. I have a wife that loves me and two boys that are simply amazing. I am thankful I have a good job, a roof over my head and friends to call on in my times of need. I know I could go on and on because, truthfully, I have a lot to be thankful for. I am truly blessed, I suppose. But instead I want to list some things that I think all of us should be thankful for. This past election has...

  • It’s no party for the Republican Party

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 22, 2012

The elections are over. It almost sounds like a death statement. “Doctor, we have no pulse. Election is dead.” This political season was a rough one. Granted we here in Wyoming didn’t get all the trash talking that those in battleground states got, but we did get our fair share. I wondered for a bit why it was we didn’t get the attack ads when it dawned on me, Wyoming is so Red, there is no point in trying. Sure, the Democrats have to throw a few ads at us to give the appearance that they haven’t forgotten about us, but they saw the writing o...

  • Giving thanks and support to our veterans

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 8, 2012

This weekend, every town, in every state, will host some sort of celebration to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Services in honor of Veterans Day, this Sunday. Most of these men and women entered the services freely, some of them were drafted. It doesn’t matter. What matters is they all went. They went while you and I stayed home, went to college, got married and started a family. Some of them fought. Some of them never saw action. Some of them stayed back in support. Some of them never came home. Some never came home fully....

  • Mama drama of the in-law sort

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 1, 2012

No matter how much you like someone, or how much you enjoy someone’s company, a houseguest can be a trying time. I am currently entering my 12th day of hosting. To whom am I playing host? Well, how about my mother-in-law. See, not only do I have a house guest, I have the dreaded mother-in-law. You know the type: she comes in and tries to counter your parenting tactics, she judges you on everything you do, tells her daughter what she should be doing differently and generally wreaks havoc upon your life. You do your best to grin and bear it, b...
