    Patrick Cossel|Mar 12, 2015

With all the marbles riding on the second game of the state championship in Casper last weekend, the Pine Bluffs Hornets found themselves with their backs up against the wall in the semifinals. Facing a tough Rocky Mountain team, the Hornets couldn't recover from a half time deficit, and lost the game 57-69. The Hornets defeated Lyman 44-31 the night before to advance to round two. "On Friday we just didn't make shots that we usually make; unfortunate for us it happened to be on the very night w...

  • Broncs drop state opener

    Patrick Cossel|Mar 12, 2015

The Burns Broncs stepped into the 1A-2A State tournament as the number four seed in Casper this weekend. The Broncs schedule was a tough one as they opened the tournament against number one seed Greybull on Thursday. The state tournament is such that you keep going if you win. If you lose, you get another chance to fight your way back to possibly place third. The game started with a tight first quarter. Burns was able to contain the home team to only four points, while putting up two of their...

  • Two in a row

    Patrick Cossel|Jan 29, 2015

A resounding victory at home, followed by a clutch win on the road, gave the Pine Bluffs High boys’ basketball team a sweep of the weekend. The Hornets defeated Burns, 65-23, at home on Friday and then traveled to Lusk to win a close one against Niobrara County, 63-59, the next day. Christening their new floor with a win against Burns on Friday, the Hornets took an early lead and then continued to roll. The Hornets were up by seven in the first quarter, leading 15-8. By halftime, that lead had doubled as they led 34-20. In the third period, the...

  • Lady Hornets pull out win

    Patrick Cossel|Jan 22, 2015

The Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets took to the road this weekend as they faced off against the Saratoga Lady Panthers in Saratoga. The Lady Hornets started the game a little flat in the first half but found their rhythm in the second to score a 62-43 win. Coach Lindsey Forbes expressed her concerns about how the girls started the first half. "We didn't play our best basketball. We came out flat the first half and did not execute on either end," the coach said. The Lady Hornets found themselves...

  • Hornets buzz past Panthers

    Patrick Cossel|Jan 22, 2015

A dominate effort on both ends of the court led the Pine Bluffs Hornets to an 86-52 road victory against the Saratoga Panthers in Saratoga on Friday. The Hornets took the lead in the first period and never looked back. They out-scored Saratoga 30-10 in the first quarter and 15-14 in the second. At the half Pine Bluffs led 45-24. Coming out of the locker-rooms at half-time was business as usual for Pine Bluffs as they continued to wrack up more points leaving Saratoga further and further behind....

  • Lady Hornets topple Tongue River in overtime

    Patrick Cossel|Jan 15, 2015

It's the type of shot players dream about. The one when they are in the gym by themselves and they imagine making that clutch shot - one second left on the clock, the team is down by one, the shot is fired, it hits the rim and rolls around before falling in. The crowd goes wild as the team wins the game. Only in this case it wasn't the game winning shot, but it was close enough. The Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets traveled to the Dayton/Big Horn area this week to play in the Winter Classic hosted by...

Wrapping up the 2015 Winter Classic in Dayton, Saturday, the Pine Bluffs Hornets scored their second win of the tournament as they defeated the Tongue River Eagles, 68-53. On Friday, the Hornets defeated Big Horn 57-46. The Hornets never trailed in the game, and held the Eagles to only two points in the first quarter. Both points came by way of free throws. Kyle Steger started the scoring onslaught for the Hornets by hitting the front side of two free throw attempts. The first Pine Bluffs field...

  • Hornets stung by Eagles on the road

    Patrick Cossel|Oct 30, 2014

The curtain dropped on the Pine Bluffs Hornet’s football season on the road Friday at Dayton. The feisty Hornets fought all the way to the last minute, but couldn’t overcome the Tongue River Eagles’ early onslaught as they fell 53-22. Tongue River struck early in the first to go up 7-0. On the proceeding kick off, the Hornets’ Preston Thurin couldn’t secure the ball and fumbled it. The fumble was promptly picked up by Eagle Matthew Lobach, who ran it in for a score. The two-point conversion attempt was good to give the Eagles a 15-0 lead. Bot...

    Patrick Cossel|Oct 16, 2014

It was a tough day of football for the Burns Broncs as they traveled to Big Horn to face off against the division-leading Big Horn Rams. Here, Broncs receiver Rowan Fitchner catches a deep strike over the middle for a huge gain. Big Horn dominated the game winning 56-7....

  • Walking through life's open door

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 25, 2013

The Son Never Shines on Closed Doors — Flogging Molly Texas is a hot and miserable state in the summer time. It is humid, crowded, full of bugs and just generally uncomfortable. But, despite all this, I had to go there. For more than 10 years my parents have called San Antonio home. They moved to the Lone Star state, after an extended stay in Kansas, to be closer to my grandfather. My mom wanted to be around for her father as he approached his final years. Now, with grandpa gone, my parents d...

  • Lessons learned in 'Classroom of our Mind'

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 4, 2013

Working as reporter has given me the opportunity to cover a great many things. When I was a cub reporter, I was pretty eager to cover everything. I do mean everything. While covering an inspirational speaker, I became enamored by one of his motivation/self realization techniques — spending 10 minutes each day in the “Classroom of our Mind.” Today, while driving across the Hi-Line of Montana, alone, I figured it was be a good time to do just that. Truth be told, I make it a point to turn off a...

  • Strong pull of music and lyrics

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jun 13, 2013

Every once in awhile a song comes over the radio that simply blows your mind. So good is said song, that you scour the record stores, online or where ever else you get your music, just to find this song. You can’t live without it! Right now, for me, there is an album that is pulling so strongly at me, I just have to tell people about it. Please keep in mind, my tastes tend to be a bit eclectic. My iPod really does have some of every genre on it — every genre. Recently I am enamored with Ray LaM...

  • Planning some summer fun

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|May 16, 2013

Like a race car going from zero to 60, we have have transitioned from winter to summer here in Wyoming. It’s mind blowing! As I write this the temperature is more akin to a late summer day as the thermometer hovers near the 90 degree mark. To think, just two weeks ago we had snow on the ground! I suppose this gives weight to the thought, “If you don’t like the weather in Wyoming, just wait, it will change.” Truth is, I have heard this in many of the states I have lived in. And, while I am sure...

  • Diamond in the rough

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|May 9, 2013

A few years back I was working as the manager/head cook of an Italian restaurant. I was working long hours, six days a week and was miserable. I took the job because I couldn’t find anything else. I had been out of work for several months and needed something. I did well enough, especially considering I had no formal training. But it didn’t change the fact that I wasn’t happy. But, the truth of the matter is, without that job I wouldn’t be where I am today. One of my regular customers was the publisher/owner of the local newspaper. For whateve...

  • You're only as old as you feel?

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Apr 25, 2013

I used to say, or rather I still say, that your age is relative to how you feel. Although my age is quickly approaching 40, I maintain that I do not feel that way — at least not in my heart. My body, on the other hand, likes to give me subtle reminders. Recently, while getting my hair trimmed, my barber used a small trimmer to clean up the unsightly hair growing out of my ears and to clean up my eyebrows. I of course didn’t mind but had to think to myself, “when did this become the norm?...

  • The blessings of small town living

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Apr 11, 2013

Living in a small town provides one with some unadvertised benefits. I suppose to some they could be a hindrance, but, I would wager, in the right light, all would see it as a benefit. What benefit? Lack of anonymity. Meaning, everyone knows who you are and who your kids are and on and on. When I lived in Concordia, Kan., they didn’t ask me where I came from, instead they asked who I belonged to. This befuddled me as I was an adult at the time. But, when I told them my dad’s name (I grew up in...

  • There is no set timeline for accomplishment

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Apr 4, 2013

Have you ever noticed that there is a “timeline” for when things should happen in our lives? Ok, this doesn’t necessarily mean that our lives are mapped out, but it’s true. If you look at many parenting books it indicates a base age for when your kid should start doing certain things — this can include teething, walking talking and so on. For my youngest son, Aydin, that timeline was thrown out the window. Aydin walked late, talked late and basically did everything else late, too. I thought t...

  • Congratulations! You just won … nothing!

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 28, 2013

I received an e-mail from a Wilson Yin this morning telling me he wanted to talk to me about a $48M confidential matter. I couldn’t believe it! Someone in China — the e-mail showed that it has been translated — was wanting to talk to me about a confidential matter. How could this be? Who could this be? I must be truly blessed! I was stunned. I was shocked. I was … entertained. Like many of you who receive e-mails like this, my first thought was to delete it. Obviously this is a scam like so...

  • St. Patrick's Day reason to celebrate heritage

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 21, 2013

Like many of you, my family and I celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday. As we sat down to our meal of corned beef, cabbage, carrots and potatoes, my youngest son asked why it was we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. He said it wasn’t like Christmas, Easter or even Halloween, so why, he asked. My wife, not being big in history looked at me. She said, “Your name is Patrick, you tell him.” I am not sure how the two relate, but I knew I wasn’t getting out of it. Lucky for me this is a topic I hap...

  • Lessons from the weekend

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 14, 2013

There are two things I learned this weekend: 1. Bountiful Baskets are pretty cool. 2. Daylight Savings Time is not so cool. As you are all aware this weekend we did the whole “Spring Ahead” thing. You know, when we begrudgingly turn our clocks ahead an hour. This means that many of us struggled to shake the fog blanketing our brains as our bodies tried to adjust to the time change. So why do we do this? Daylight Savings Time was started in 1918 in an effort to conserve energy but was rep...

  • Where does the music take you?

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 7, 2013

I’ve become enamored by the Playing For Change videos that have a home on YouTube. Have you seen these? It’s possible someone has posted a video on your Facebook page and maybe you shared it with someone else or on your own page. If not, you should go to YouTube and check it out. Playing For Change was born out of the idea that we could inspire each other through music. The videos are a collection of musicians all over the world playing the same song. Songs such as Stand By Me, Sitting on the...

  • Don’t let fearful thoughts control you

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Feb 21, 2013

I watched a movie this weekend that I have seen many times before. However, this time the movie hit me in a different way. The movie, Chasing Amy, is directed and written by Kevin Smith. Smith is well known for his other films, Clerks, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Dogma and Jersey Girl. In this movie, the main character, played by Ben Affleck, has fallen for a woman who is attracted to other women. Her character, played by Joey Lauren Adams, in turn falls in love with him. Without going in to a lot of detail about the film, Ben...

  • News that matters

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Feb 14, 2013

I am sure many of you tuned in to the 55th Grammy Awards presentation, Sunday night. I tuned in a bit late, but was there soon enough to see one of my favorite bands, Mumford and Sons, perform with an array of musicians and then win album of the year with their sophomore studio album, Babel. If you haven’t heard this album, or are on the fence about buying it, hesitate no more. It is a fantastic collection of songs and an excellent addition to the band’s discography. I own the album on vinyl and digitally. While I enjoyed what I got to see of...

  • Where has common decency gone?

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Feb 7, 2013

I have to wonder what has happened, in this day and age, to drive the common decencies and respect that our parents taught us, away. It seems to be commonplace now to go to a grocery store and cut someone off in the parking lot, leave your trash in your cart, leave said cart in between cars or otherwise take up a parking place, or to spit your gum on the ground so some one can step in it — I have been the victim of this more than once. Is it really so hard to clean up your trash, put away y...
