  • An entertaining evening of melodies

    Charlene Smith|Dec 27, 2012

Charlene Smith/Pine Bluffs Post The Pine Bluffs Junior-Senior High School were in tune Tuesday evening at their winter concert. After three opening performances, there was a selection of solos and duets. Summer Bowman jazzed up the audience with “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. The high school choir paid tribute to those lost and hurting in Conn. with “Grown-Up Christmas List”. As always, the jam band put warmth into the evening with their version of “Silver Bells....

  • Looking back at some of the more interesting stories of Wyoming’s 2012

    Bill Sniffin|Dec 27, 2012

For a state whose destiny is linked to energy prices, the year 2012 in Wyoming was turbulent. Looking back on the past 12 months, the biggest news story affecting the most people in Wyoming is the fall of energy prices, which resulted in steep declines in tax revenue. This might be an exaggeration since I am assuming that the world did not end on Dec. 21. You are hopefully alive and really reading this column. We are assuming the Mayans were wrong. Next week, I intend to write my annual column...

  • Lessons from the 12 Days of Christmas

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Dec 27, 2012

Every year, I look forward to the 12 days after Christmas. It is the time celebrated in the Christian religions for the time it took for the three wise men reach the newborn Jesus Christ. I learned later in life, it actually took the wise men years to reach the little king. Perhaps they lacked an OnStar or lost “the star” in the desert sand, but it’s still a long journey to meet even a king. Whether it took them 12 days or 12 years, they came bearing gifts. And this is where the crazy, much...

The checks were presented to the FFA Advisors and students by employees of FVC. The donation goes to support FFA programming at each of the schools. The Burns, Pine Bluffs and Wheatland FFA Chapters were all selected by FVC to receive funds to help support the FFA Chapters and agricultural education. “FVC is extremely proud of the efforts put for...

  • The Americas, Asia bring in the holiday season

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Dec 27, 2012

In some conversations about the number of continents, many people count North and South America as one. Our land-mass sharing neighbors to the south have many spicy versions of Christmas tidings. But for the intent of making friends from neighbors, we say, “Nuestro continente es su continente.” The Americas do Christmas well. So well, that many who don’t believe in the reason for the holiday, celebrate Christmas. Maybe that is the way it is meant, to include as many as we can in the mirac...

  • Table Mountain tops commissioners time again

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Dec 27, 2012

After announcing the commissioners would again hear the “on-going saga” of Table Mountain, Chairwoman Gay Woodhouse said she would not be voting. Attorney Frank Falen addressed the commissioners first and thanked them for the work they had done to assist in drafting an acceptable decision. Falen said he approved of the plan for the county to construct a road and charge his client $9,000. “At the risk of sounding over eager, I brought the check with me,” Falen said. Attorney Brad Healy followed F...

The Burns Lady Broncs took a road trip to South High School on Tuesday and came home with another win in the record books. The 53-41 victory brings their season record to 8-1. They are 1-0 in league play. “The kids forced a lot of turnovers with their defense and converted enough of them into points to get a win,” said coach Barry Ward. Pawnee now sits on a 4-2 record for the campaign. “We played hard again, and that is always our number one emphasis,” said Pawnee head coach Tim Brunelle. “We created many turnovers, didn’t always take advantage of them, but at least had opportunities.” Top scorers for the g...

  • Banner County News

    Barb Cross|Dec 27, 2012

As I sit down to write this last newsletter of 2012, I cannot help but remember when we were on the brink of the new century, back in 1999. Some folks were pretty sure that the world was coming to an end. And most recently of course all of the hoopla about the Mayan Calendar and the same fear in the hearts of some folks once again. And here we are! Ushering in 2013 — it just doesn’t seem like 12 years have passed since this century began. The time just keeps going faster and faster. I, for one...

  • Burns News

Sharon Stacy or Janet from the Burns Library, Burns Branch Library|Dec 27, 2012

Sorry to have to disappoint the Mayan Calendar that predicted the end of civilization that we know of, but we are all still here. As Friday’s dawn began sweeping across the globe, there was no sign of an apocalypse. Do you ever wonder why we fall for such nonsense? Maybe we should just live for the day and be thankful for what we have and not worry so much about will happen in the future. I know I’m very thankful for the past week’s snow storm that dropped 8 inches. We hope everyone was home when the snow began to fall on Tuesday night. I, of c...

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Dec 27, 2012

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone found their most favorite thing either under the tree or around the dinner table on Tuesday. The winter moisture, called snow, found its way to us, only to be melted and blown away. Not much going on in the little town this week. The kids are out of school and most of us are enjoying company or traveling. Let us know if you have any news. Send it to [email protected]. We would love to hear from you....

  • Looking Back

    Dec 27, 2012

1 years ago Cody – Three months ago Loe Nau’s lower jaw was destroyed when he accidentally discharged a shotgun. Now he has a new jaw. Nau, who is seventeen, has returned from Chicago, where he was the subject of remarkable bone, skin and flesh grafting. The surgeons built up a new sub-maxilliary (sic) on the ruins of the natural one, grated flesh to this, and skin to the flesh. Hardly a scar shows. Chicago’s Christmas cost nearly $20,000,000, making it the most prosperous in the city’s history. The little cottage in the Bronx where Edgar All...

  • No-till notes — what we’ve learned on cover crops

    Mark Watson, Panhandle no-till educator|Dec 27, 2012

I’d like to start by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas! I hope everyone is able to spend the holidays with friends and family spreading good cheer throughout our region. We have the results of our cover crop biomass sampling back and the cover crops performed about like we thought they would. I think we could justify the cost of planting the cover crops with the benefits we’ll see from producing them, but I do have some concerns with producing cover crops. Our sampling from the cover cro...
