  • Summer rains cause damage to area school

    Polly Taylor|Aug 20, 2015

Summer storms can be pleasant, but when the rainfall occurs frequently and in torrents, damage is almost always the result. This problem was a major topic at last week's meeting of the Laramie County School District 2 Board of Trustees. Rain from several summer storms, which occurred in close succession, caused damage to the gymnasium floor at Burns Junior-Senior High School where volleyball is scheduled to be played this fall. It's unclear whether any of the damage was caused by roof leaks, but...

  • Country's oldest road

    Bill Sniffin|Aug 20, 2015

August has to be just about the best month to be in Wyoming. Love the weather. Love the sights. Love traveling around. Unfortunately for us, most of our August travel in the state has seen Nancy and me traveling through the state on our way OUT of the state! We have been in Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa so far in August and are just wanting to be back in the Cowboy State. I am writing this from western Iowa where we are attending Nancy’s high school reunion and the wedding of a f...

  • Just a Few Thoughts...

    Polly Taylor|Aug 20, 2015

A friend of mine once told me a joke about the United States Postal Service. This was way back in the day, when Kinney's Shoes had not yet been gobbled up by a larger company that was afraid of a little healthy competition. Please bear in mind that this friend was also an employee of said postal service at the time. If the jokes one hears at the postal service are anything like the ones you hear when you're working in the medical profession, or in my case related to someone working in medicine,...

  • Latest sage grouse numbers available

    Submitted|Aug 20, 2015

Wyoming Game and Fish Department personnel and other partners joined together to visit over 1,600 sage grouse breeding grounds, or leks, this year. The effort was part of the annual count of greater sage grouse. Each year Game and Fish, volunteers, private consultants and federal agencies visit as many of the known leks to record the numbers of male sage grouse. “What we saw across the state was consistent with several neighboring states and that was an uptick in the number of male sage grouse on the leks,” said Tom Christiansen, Game and Fis...

  • PAWS test results show improvement in some areas

    Polly Taylor|Aug 20, 2015

The Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students – or PAWS – test results for the 2014-'15 school year were discussed at last week's school board meeting. "Without pointing fingers, newer and higher standards have been implemented over the past two years by the Department of Education, so the 2014 tests were different from the 2013 tests, so it's really not fair to compare the two," said Superintendent Jon Abrams. Elementary grades three, five and six were tested on math and reading, while the f...

  • Looking Back

    Aug 20, 2015

1 Years Ago August 19, 1915 Excessive Hail Damage The excessive hail this season may cause the farmers to quit banking too heavy on the small grain crop and persuade them to raise roughness and stock. This change will be a big thing for the farmer and the country. A man never gets rich who raises grain exclusively for market; while on the other hand, those who raise feed and stock make money. The farmer who hauls his grain to the market is selling his land by the bushel,--land runs down; while the man that handles stock is constantly building...

  • Banner Co News

    Barb Cross|Aug 20, 2015

Good Morning Banner County! Here we are almost at the end of summer and it just does not seem possible to me. Where did the time go? I know that I did not have that much fun. I do hope we have an Indian Summer’ because I sure could use some decent weather in order to get all that needs to be taken care of finished before winter. The almanac is saying that this winter is not to be a mild one. Monday was a great day as those old yellow school buses were seen traveling the roads and depositing c... Full story

The funny thing about sunflowers? They don’t care if our summer has been less than bright. They don’t care if we have been smiling since last time they were here. They come and shine and brighten our world, no questions asked. And no expectations. Would it not be pleasant if more humans were like sunflowers. Expecting nothing in return and always greeting whoever passes their way with a smile and sunshine no matter who you are or what you can give them. Little kids are often sunflowers in our... Full story

  • No Till Notes: Residue Level

    Mark Watson|Aug 20, 2015

Believe it or not, the end of the growing season is rapidly approaching. Now is a good time to check your fields for the level of residue you have in them. If you find your residue levels are low and there is a large amount of bare soil observed you may need to assess how you can change your residue management to improve your residue levels. The level of residue you find in your fields directly affects how much moisture your soil is able to provide to the crop you had growing in the field....

  • Hartman selected as next Laramie Co Librarian

    Submitted|Aug 20, 2015

With the position vacant less than three months, the Laramie County Library System (LCLS) Board of Trustees have selected Carey D. Hartmann as the next County Librarian. Hartmann is the first County Librarian to be appointed by the Board of Trustees in nearly 25 years. The regional search for this position turned up a number of qualified candidates, but none had the winning combination of leadership skills, understanding of the library's purpose and functions, and ability to maintain fiscal responsibility, quite like Hartmann. "From the start... Full story
