  • Commissioners prepare for general election

    Allie Hurley|Aug 28, 2014

    M. Lee Hasenauer, along with Troy Thomas, R-Commissioner, and Linda Heath, R-Commissioner, will be put on the ballot for the Nov. 4 general election and will compete against Ron Kailey Jr., D-Commissioner. If there is enough write-in votes, then another Democrat will be put on the Nov. 4 ballot, Hasenauer said. "In Laramie county there's a 2:1 ratio of Republicans over Democrats which really limits the chance for Democrats to be successful in the general election. That's just my opinion,"...

  • Despite predictable results, GOP primary full of surprises

    Bill Sniffin|Aug 28, 2014

After lots of finger-pointing, shrill complaints and off the wall ideas, the primary campaign of 2014 came to a close with predictable results. And as readers of this column may recall, I went out on a limb a few weeks ago and predicted the outcomes of the three most contested statewide races. How I did with those predictions deserves some comment but before getting into that, here are some other observations: It is truly impressive that an African-American man could capture one-third of the vot...

  • To the volunteers throughout Wyoming

    Governor Matt Mead|Aug 28, 2014

This is a tremendous win. I am honored by the support of thousands of volunteers throughout Wyoming who helped tell our story. This was a grassroots effort. Wyoming voters expect personal contact, and I have done that as Governor and I continued that in my campaign. My campaign relied on direct communication with Wyoming voters – volunteers went to 60,000 doors; individuals contributed and over 5,000 friends shared my message on Facebook. I made promises to the people of Wyoming four years a...

  • Arrest made in 1972 Laramie murder

    Aug 28, 2014

Laramie Police have made an arrest in a murder that happened more than 40 years ago. Authorities announced Friday night that 61-year-old Lance David Bean has been arrested for the murder of Sharon Reher in 1972. Police have not said what led them to Bean and further DNA testing will be done. Reher’s relatives have been notified of the arrest. Reher was found strangled with her throat slit in her home in April 1972. Reher had moved from Pine Bluffs to Laramie and was working as a bookkeeper. She attended Pine Bluffs High School and graduated i...

  • Average Wyoming ACT Scores Increase

    Aug 28, 2014

Performance results on the ACT for the 2014 graduating class were released today by the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) and the ACT. Statewide, the average composite score for the graduating class of 2014 rose from a year ago, increasing from 19.8 in 2013 to 20.1 in 2014. This increase is noteworthy because more Wyoming students than ever are participating in the ACT – over 6,000 students in 2014 – since the ACT is required for state and federal accountability in grade 11. In contrast, most of the students across the nation who take the...

  • 46 percent voter turnout

    Staff report|Aug 28, 2014

Secretary of State Max Maxfield released preliminary information on voter turnout in yesterday’s primary election. “Based on unofficial results from the county clerks, voter turnout for the primary election was 46 percent of those registered to vote,” Secretary Maxfield said. According to State Election Director Peggy Nighswonger, that percentage is comparable to turnout for the primary elections in 2010 and 2006 when the five state elected officials were on the ballot. Voter turnout in the 2010 primary election was 51 percent and 46 perce...

  • Governor candidate Pete Gosar continues to campaign for a better future for Wyoming

    Staff report|Aug 28, 2014

After Tuesday, August 19’s primary election, Democratic candidate for Governor Pete Gosar said he is eager to continue discussions with the people of Wyoming on the most important issues facing the future of the state. Gosar congratulated Gov. Matt Mead on his victory in the primary election and said he looks forward to the next few months as Wyoming voters now have a “clear choice between two starkly different candidates.” “We know what the vote totals are but I think the people of Wyoming want common sense and common decency and that’s...

  • No state recounts in primary election

    Submitted|Aug 28, 2014

Secretary of State, Max Maxfield, announced today that given the unofficial election results submitted by county clerks, it appears as if no statutory recounts are required in any statewide or legislative races. “As we all know, there were certainly some close races, but none that by statute require a recount,” stated Maxfield. According to state statute (W.S. 22-16-109), a recount is required if the number of votes between the winning and losing candidate is less than one percent of the votes cast for the winning candidate. “Some people have...

  • Banner Co. News

    Barb Cross|Aug 28, 2014

Good morning Banner County. At least for most of us Monday started out much cooler and probably not all that bad. However, a fire west of us a few miles kept the volunteer fire department busy beginning Sunday afternoon and all through the night. The fire was still under investigation as I wrote this the fire burned well over a thousand acres. It was still burning Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. so none of this is final as far as the amount of damage that was done. Area firemen came to assist as...

  • Hereford News

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Aug 28, 2014

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Steve and Jan Hauer sang “Remember Me.” The sermon topic was “Comforting the Afflicted” from the book of Jeremiah. The prophet Jeremiah preached for 40 years under the leadership of 5 different kings, and no one listened. Jeremiah kept telling the people to repent of their sins and come back to serving God. Pastor Opdycke compared the warnings of Jeremiah to America today. Some pastors are warning people to repent and come back to God,...

Saturday morning, Albin woke up to a nice warm summer day followed by a summer storm in the evening. Sunday, it felt like fall had arrived as the day had a cool and crisp start to it. That evening, our volunteer firefighters were called to help with a hefty blaze across the Nebraska border. Fall weather ushered in the first full week of school. The first full day of school was Monday for our Albin Wildcats. After a couple of half days last week, the students, staff and parents have fallen into...

  • Looking Back

    Aug 28, 2014

1 years ago August 28, 1914 British war vessels swarm (just out of sight) off our coast, says the Hartford Courant. German war vessels (just out of sight) are hovering about the Atlantic to capture French or British ships. Mysterious searchlights flash along the eastern horizon for the entertainment of those at the seashore. Startling, indeed-and then “nihil fit.” What does it recall to the adult mind? Don’t you remember that mysterious “Spanish fleet,” which spread a scare all along the coast, not by any means omitting Washington? There nev...

  • No Till Note "Harvest"

    Mark Watson|Aug 28, 2014

After visiting with producers around the Panhandle I would guess that the winter wheat and field pea harvests that have just wrapped up are going to be some of the best crop yields this region has recorded. We were blessed with good fall, spring, and early summer precipitation around our region and the yields reflect the abundant moisture we received. There were some areas that experienced significant hail damage from some of the severe weather in our area. Aside from these pockets of hail damag...
